Okay, can we go ahead and make this change now since everyone has agreed? I have also checked with our vetter who said that Mln is more common, and we use Mln according to our Italian style guide.

Note: We use Mld for billions instead of Mrd, and Bln for trillions.

Our Italian linguist has confirmed that ‘Mln’ is also our preferred version, and we agree with this change.

Just FYI, here’s additional context from the linguist: The International European Convention has adopted ‘Mio’ instead of ‘Mln’. That might be the reason why the abbreviation was changed to ‘Mio’ in v43 since Mio is preferred by the EU. However, ‘Mio’ is really unusual and not commonly used by Italian people.

Accepted 2024-04-03 by CLDR-TC to revert “Mio” to “Mln”.

Also look at how we can better guide vetters to use customary usage.

In CLDR 44 we suggested Mio and Mrd, more recent abbreviations, because they are compliant with the European Union Guidelines for official publications.

 

 

Having no specific context in CLDR (are those units of measure used in a formal, scientific context or are they used in a more general, informal context?), we decided to go for the more official option, backed up by official reference material.

 

However, I agree that Mio and Mrd are not very common and not immediately recognizable by the general public. I myself wasn't aware that Mio and Mrd were the official abbreviations until I researched them for CLDR. If the official abbreviations cause more harm than good (i.e. they are not recognized by the general public), I think we could reconsider them and revert them both to Mln and Mld respectively.

 

I suggest that we revert them both at this point, for consistency. It would be inconsistent to have one traditional abbreviation and one formal abbreviation. Some people even argue that Mrd reminds them of a swear word in Italian.

It seems the vetters in v44 forgot about the “reflect common usage” guidance.

Vetters had a discussion that ‘Mio’ is the official abbreviation citing the following link:
